Bearberry - Arctostaphylos uva-ursi

General: very low-growing, mat forming, ground cover shrub.

Leaves: thick, leathery, spoon-shaped. Shiny green above, paler green below with smooth edges. Size of a pinkie fingertip.

Flowers: clusters of whiteish-pink, urn-shaped flowers.

Fruit: pea-sized, round and red with a pit in the middle like a cherry.

Reclamation Notes: very useful in erosion control plantings. Recommended moist to dry, coarse textured (sandy) soils, low in nutrients and well-drained. Success documented with stem cuttings in the fall inoculated with endomycorrhizae.
